Senior Session Preparation Guide

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session

Your senior session is all about celebrating who you are in this moment — your personality, your style, and the season of life you’re stepping into. My goal is to make the experience relaxed, fun, and confidence‑boosting, so this guide will help you feel fully prepared.

A little planning ahead helps your photos feel polished, natural, and true to you.

Styling Your Outfits

Your outfits set the tone for your session and help show off your personality. Most seniors bring 3-4 outfits so we can capture a variety of looks.

A few styling tips to keep in mind:

  • Neutral or earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you.

  • Avoid large logos, neon colors, or busy patterns that can distract.

  • Bring at least one outfit that feels elevated (a dress, button‑down, or something with texture).

  • Choose pieces that fit well and make you feel confident — that always shows in photos.

  • Layers like jackets, cardigans, or accessories add depth and variety.

  • Any sport(s) or extra-circular related gear - cheer uniform, jerseys, pompoms, medals, science projects, hunting gear, etc.

If you’re unsure about what to wear, feel free to send photos — I’m always happy to help you choose.

Hair & Makeup Tips

You don’t need professional hair and makeup, but many seniors choose it because it boosts confidence and photographs beautifully.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Slightly enhanced makeup (a bit more than everyday) photographs best.

  • Avoid heavy shimmer or SPF-heavy products that can reflect light.

  • Soft curls, waves, or simple natural styles work well in most locations.

  • If you’re getting a haircut or color refresh, schedule it about a week before your session.

Most importantly, choose a look that still feels like you.

Color Palette Inspiration

Here are a few examples of some seniors that I have photographed along with a couple color palettes that can help you style some outfits together.

Choosing the Right Location

The location or what we would consider the backdrop helps tell the story of your personality and style. Some seniors choose places that feel meaningful, while others pick a backdrop that simply fits their vibe.

A few great options:

  • Desert landscapes or open fields

  • Urban or downtown areas

  • Lakes, rivers, or waterfronts

  • School campus or sports facilities

  • Rooftops or parking garages for a modern look

If you’re not sure where to go, I can recommend locations based on the style you’re going for.

A Few Days Before Your Session

To make sure everything looks its best, try to plan these things at least 48 hours before:

  • Spray tans

  • Waxing or eyebrow shaping

  • Hair coloring or toning

Also make sure:

  • Outfits are steamed or ironed

  • Shoes are clean

  • Nails are tidy (neutral or simple colors photograph best)

If you have any inspiration photos or ideas, feel free to send them to me. I’ll incorporate the feel while keeping everything natural and true to my style.

What to Bring to Your Session

A few small items can make your session smoother:

  • A small brush or comb

  • Lip gloss or lipstick for touch-ups

  • Makeup touch up kit (if you tend to get oily)

  • Comfortable shoes if the location requires walking

  • A jacket or extra layer depending on the season

  • Water, especially in warmer months

You’re also welcome to bring items that show off your personality:

  • Sports gear or uniforms

  • Musical instruments

  • Letterman jacket

  • Cap & gown (if you have it early)

  • A favorite book, skateboard, or hobby-related item

  • Motorcycle or cool car

These little touches help make your photos feel uniquely you.

Preparing for the Camera

Almost every senior says they feel awkward in front of the camera — and that’s completely normal.

You don’t need to know how to pose.

I’ll guide you through everything in a way that feels natural and comfortable. Most of the time you’ll be walking, moving, laughing, or interacting with the environment so your photos feel genuine.

The best photos happen when you relax and just have fun with it.

The Day of the Session

A few quick tips for the day of:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to get ready so you’re not rushed.

  • Eat beforehand so you feel comfortable and energized.

  • Arrive in your first outfit, fully ready to start.

  • Bring your outfits on hangers to keep them wrinkle‑free.

Most importantly, come ready to enjoy the experience — this is your moment to celebrate everything you’ve accomplished.

Trust the Process

My goal is to create images that feel confident, natural, and timeless. I’ll guide you through the entire session so you never have to worry about what to do.

Some of the best moments happen in between poses — when you’re laughing, moving, or simply being yourself.

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be you.

I can’t wait to capture this exciting milestone in your life.
